Kay Piña is a music teacher at Musical Arts Center of San Antonio, Inc. Kay began her music career at the age of 4, matriculating through the entire Yamaha Music Program through her senior year in high school. Kay was chosen to perform in both local and regional Yamaha Junior Original Competition Concerts. Kay was a member of both Middle School and High School band, playing clarinet and percussion, as well as High School Concert and Show Choir. She also sang and performed in musical productions such as “The Children of Eden”, and portrayed Amahl in “Amahl and the Night Visitors”.
Kay completed her Bachelor of Arts in Music with piano as her primary instrument at Texas State University in San Marcos, graduating cum laude. She also received a minor in Communication Studies and a Jazz Certification. While at TSU Kay participated in many ensembles including Mixed Choir, Women’s Choir, Jazz Orchestra, Jazz Combo, Marching Band, Steel Band, and Accompanying.
In February of 2012 Kay completed her Dalcroze Eurhythmics Certification under the supervision of Dr. David Frego. While working on her graduate degree in music at UTSA Kay was awarded a Teaching Assistantship and taught class piano to undergraduate music majors as well as private piano lessons to students in which piano is their secondary instrument.
Kay graduated with her Master of Music in Piano Pedagogy and Performance at UTSA in Spring 2013. Kay has been teaching for 10 years including full time teaching positions as a group music teacher in the Yamaha Music Program and a full time position as a private piano instructor at Musical Arts Center of San Antonio, Inc. Her teaching experience includes extensive training and experience in teaching adults as well as children.
Kay’s most recent addition to her teaching repertoire is a Summer Dalcroze Eurhythmics course for students Kinder-High School.
In addition to teaching, Kay serves on the board of both the Alliance Music Teachers Association and the Dalcroze Society of America-Texas Chapter, and is a member of the San Antonio Music Teachers Association (SAMTA). Kay’s students are provided performance opportunities through those different organizations.
In 2010, Kay became a Nationally Certified Teacher of Music (NCTM) through the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA).
